2024: A Year of Media Eradication in Gaza

The Israeli military continues its relentless assault on Palestinian journalists in Gaza, employing targeted violence and media blackouts to suppress the Palestinian narrative. Despite the immense sacrifices, journalists remain steadfast in their mission to document the truth.

According to the latest episode of Al-Marsad on December 30, 2024, the final days of the year witnessed a tragic escalation. Five journalists from Al-Quds Al-Youm were killed outside Al-Awda Hospital in Nuseirat Camp, central Gaza. Their vehicle, an external broadcast van, was struck by a missile from an Israeli drone, resulting in their deaths by fire—marking the deadliest single-day attack on journalism during 450 days of war.

A photo of the journalists' vehicle burned out with them inside.

Just ten days earlier, on December 15, 2024, Al Jazeera photojournalist Ahmed Al-Louh was killed in a similar drone strike targeting a civil defense center in Nuseirat. Al-Louh was documenting rescue efforts at the time. His death coincided with a solidarity vigil in Khan Younis commemorating the anniversary of Al Jazeera photojournalist Samer Abu Daqa’s martyrdom.

The Gaza Government Media Office reports that 201 journalists have been killed in Gaza since the war began. Observers assert that these attacks are deliberate, aimed at silencing witnesses and erasing evidence of the atrocities committed.

International organizations defending press freedoms have condemned Israel’s actions, declaring Gaza the most dangerous place in the world for journalists. Reports emphasize that the lack of accountability emboldens Israeli forces to continue their targeted attacks on media workers.

Despite wearing protective gear marked with “Press,” Palestinian journalists have become intentional targets, underscoring Israel’s systematic attempt to suppress the Palestinian narrative while advancing its own.

According to Reporters Without Borders and the Committee to Protect Journalists, Gaza has become the deadliest zone for media work in 2024. Meanwhile, Israel ranks among the top three countries globally for imprisoning journalists and is one of the worst offenders in escaping accountability for crimes against the press.

The global Impunity Index of 2024, issued by the Committee to Protect Journalists, also lists Israel and Haiti as the most notorious nations for evading justice for crimes against journalists.
