Hossam Abu Safia, a Palestinian doctor and director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, has been detained by Israeli forces since December 27, 2024. As of today, January 11, 2025, his fate remains unknown, and the press is prevented from contacting him.
In October 2024, Israeli forces imposed a severe siege on northern Gaza, severely disrupting humanitarian aid. Despite the risks, Dr. Abu Safia and his medical team continued their duties at Kamal Adwan Hospital, even after the Israeli military repeatedly ordered them to evacuate. On October 25, 2024, Israeli forces raided the hospital, arresting Abu Safia and hundreds of patients and medical staff. After his release, he received the devastating news of his son Elias’s death in an Israeli airstrike.
On December 27, 2024, Abu Safia was once again arrested during a raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital. Images before his arrest show him walking amidst the rubble of the hospital, which had been burned by Israeli forces. Reports suggest that he was brutally beaten, stripped, and used as a human shield.
Seventeen days have passed since Dr. Abu Safia's arrest, and his fate remains unknown, with the press prevented from contacting him. Since his detention, there has been no official word on his condition or whereabouts, and his family and colleagues continue to demand answers. Dr. Hossam Abu Safia’s story has become a symbol of resilience and the ongoing struggle for justice in Gaza.
